Controlling Box Elder Bugs In Minnesota

IDENTIFICATION

Adult box elder bugs are about ½ inches long, black with orange or red markings, including three strips on the prothorax, the area right behind the head. Their wings lay flat over their bodies, overlapping each other to form an ‘X’. The immature nymphs are 1/16^th-inch long and bright red when they first hatch. As they grow older and become larger, they are red and black. You can potentially see all stages at any given time during the summer.

What do Silverfish eat?  Will I get sick if they are in my home? Will my kids get sick?  These are some of the common questions we get about these annoying insect pests.

Silverfish Infestation in Minnesota

Although Silverfish are generally nuisance insects rather than harmful, we get numerous calls regarding these insects.  Silverfish can infest in large numbers, and with the wet season, we have seen some large infestations. 

These fast-moving insects are about ¼ to ½ inch long, have tapered oval shaped bodies, and have no wings.  The tail end of the silverfish is tapered and the head is larger.  They have six legs, long antennae and three tail-like appendages on the tips of their abdomens.  Like their name implies, they are silver in color.

The Asian Lady Beetle has become a nuisance on Minnesota for many reasons.  Their large numbers, especially in the fall, can lead them into our homes.    

The Asian Lady Beetle is not known to carry any diseases.  However, while searching for food, they can inadvertently bite hard enough to break human skin, causing discomfort.  While the beetles do not sting, it can be very uncomfortable to be enjoying the outdoors and run into a swarm of these beetles and be bitten several times.

Asian Lady Beetles, Part II – Identification

Asian Lady Beetles are generally about 1/3 inch long.  They can be orange, red, yellow or black.  This beetle has black spots – usually about nineteen – and an “M” shaped mark behind its head.  Large numbers of the pest can be seen especially in the fall around your home.
