Funding For Elderly In Minnesota To Fight Bed Bugs

A change in guidelines from the Department of Human Services will help disabled, elderly residents in Minnesota with the high costs of dealing with bed bugs.The Department of Human Services in Minnesota made the decision to allow funding to be used for bed bug removal for low-income, high-risk elderly individuals.  The cost of extermination and disposal of household furniture will now be included in expenses covered in waiver programs.

In order to help combat a growing bed bug problem, the department decided recently to allow the costs of exterminating bed bugs and properly disposing of household furniture to be included in expenses covered in waiver programs for low-income, high-risk elderly individuals who receive state services. Is The Cure For Bed Bugs Worse Than The Pests?

Bloodsucking bed bugs have made a comeback in recent years. But as victims of infestation have become increasingly desperate to rid their homes of the bedeviling pests, many have only done themselves more harm.

Bed bugs do not transmit disease or cause illness — but the insecticides used to kill them do. A total of 111 illnesses associated with bed bug-related insecticides were reported in seven states between 2003 and 2010 (mostly in the last three years), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said. Most cases of poisoning were not severe, but the data included one death. (more…)
